CBD Oil for Anxiety: The Current Research
Out of the many benefits that CBD has offered people, relief from anxiety symptoms is one that is commonly discussed. Increasingly, people are choosing to try CBD oil as a natural treatment for anxiety, rather than suffering or relying on other medicines.

What is anxiety?
Anxiety is a broad term often used to refer to a range of disorders which can lead to physical and psychological symptoms including restlessness, difficulty sleeping, feelings of dread, dizziness and shortness of breath.
The condition that people usually mean when they talk about anxiety is Generalised Anxiety Disorder, which is estimated to affect up to 5% of the UK population.
However, anxiety can also be a key symptom of a number of other conditions, including panic disorder, phobias, post-traumatic stress disorder and social anxiety disorder. Anxiety-related disorders range from mild to severe depending on the individual.
CBD oil for anxiety: how does it work?
CBD oil is thought to be highly effective in treating anxiety because of its calming and relaxing effects on your body’s central nervous system. People are choosing to use it as an alternative natural treatment for anxiety, so they can manage their symptoms.
CBD has these effects on the body because of the way it interacts with the endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a system in your body which plays a vital role in keeping your body balanced. Experts are still trying to understand the range of functions benefited by the ECS, but suggest that it plays a role in regulating sleep, mood and appetite.
Your body naturally produces some cannabinoids, but taking CBD oil on a regular basis will further stimulate your endocannabinoid system. For people who suffer from anxiety and other related conditions, this may help to maximise calming effects in the central nervous system.
Has CBD oil been effective in helping people with anxiety?
A number of clinical studies have been carried out to see how regular CBD use might help anxiety.
One review in the journal Neurotherapeutics found that preclinical evidence conclusively demonstrates CBD’s effectiveness in reducing anxiety behaviours for a range of conditions, including Generalised Anxiety Disorder, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Seasonal Affective Disorder.
A study carried out on cannabidiol in anxiety and sleep found that anxiety scores decreased within the first month for 57 patients (79.2%) who took CBD regularly and remained decreased during the study duration.
And it’s not just medical studies that are pointing to the effectiveness of CBD. Personal stories are also gaining attention, and many of these show success.
Mona Jones, a journalist for Women’s Health Magazine, discusses how she has been dealing with panic attacks and anxiety from a young age. In her piece, she writes that she was having panic attacks almost every week during her final year of university, so decided to try a different solution - CBD oil.
She found that it had an almost instant effect on her anxiety and has been using it ever since. Jones is relieved to have found something that can help her manage her anxiety on a daily basis.
In the future, even more research will be done on CBD oil for anxiety and more people will test it out as a treatment. However, even at the moment, given the existing evidence, we feel pretty confident that it does have a positive impact on managing anxiety - at least for some people.
