CBD Oil for Arthritis: The Current Research

The health benefits of CBD are often reported by those who have used it to maintain wellness and manage symptoms of certain conditions, both physical and mental.

In this blog, we take a look at the current research on CBD oil for arthritis to see whether it could be used to manage the pain associated with this condition.

What is arthritis?

Arthritis is a common condition that causes pain and inflammation in the joints. According to the NHS, more than 10 million people in the UK are living with arthritis or other similar conditions that affect the joints. Although it is often associated with the older generation, it affects people of all ages, including children.

The two most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis, which affects almost 9 million people in the UK, and rheumatoid arthritis, which affects more than 400,000 people.

Osteoarthritis affects the cartilage lining of the joint which makes movement more difficult, and leads to stiffness and pain. The most commonly affected joints are in the hands, knees, hips and spine.

With rheumatoid arthritis, the joints are targeted by our body’s immune system which leads to swelling and pain. It initially affects the outer covering but can spread across the joint, leading to further swelling.

One of the most common symptoms of arthritis is inflammation in and around the joint, which is why it is thought that anything which can minimise joint inflammation will help those suffering from it. There is no cure for arthritis, but certain treatments can be used to manage the symptoms, such as medication, physiotherapy and surgery.

Increasingly, it is thought that, because CBD oil has anti-inflammatory properties, it could be used to manage the pain and inflammation caused by arthritis.

Clinical research on CBD oil for arthritis

Initial research into the impact of CBD oil on arthritis and other inflammatory conditions has been promising.

One study, published in 2015, found that topical CBD application has therapeutic potential for relief of arthritis pain-related behaviours and inflammation without evident side-effects.

Another study which used rats to assess the potential impact of CBD on rheumatoid arthritis found that it has combined immunosuppressive and anti-inflammatory effects, meaning it could be effective in managing the symptoms of the diseases.

As well as helping humans who suffer from arthritis, it is also thought that CBD oil could be used on dogs who have arthritis or other inflammatory joint diseases.

A 2018 study on dogs with osteoarthritis, for example, found that pain decreased during CBD treatment and no side effects were reported by the dog owners. They concluded with a suggestion that 2mg/kg of CBD twice daily can help increase comfort and activity in dogs with osteoarthritis.

All of this research is very exciting and we hope to see more clinical studies being carried out in this area to fully assess the impact of CBD oil on arthritis and other related conditions.

How are people using CBD oil for arthritis?

It is generally thought that the best way to use CBD for arthritis is to apply it topically. You can do this using CBD oil or creams, gels and lotions.

On a thread published by arthritis support group Creaky Joints, there are multiple people sharing their anecdotal experiences of using CBD oil to treat their symptoms. Several of these users suggest that applying CBD topically can be effective for managing inflammation and pain.
