CBD Oil for Sleep: The Current Research

People use CBD oil for a number of different reasons, including stress reduction and relaxation, but one of the specific reasons people buy CBD oil is to help them with sleep. In this blog, we take a look at the current research on using CBD oil for sleep and how it works.

What is the current research on CBD oil for sleep?

This is an area of interest for those looking into the potential benefits of CBD and the research so far has been promising.

One paper in the Journal of Psychopharmacology looked into the effective administration of CBD had on total sleep times and found that the total percentage of sleep significantly increased in the groups treated with 10 and 40 mg/kg of CBD compared to the placebo.

A study of the effect of CBD on those with anxiety and sleep complaints similarly found that sleep scores improved within the first month in two-thirds of patients.

More clinical research needs to be done in this area to determine the exact effect of CBD on sleep, but so far, the clinical evidence seems to point towards the fact that it may help at least some of the population.

In terms of people’s buying habits and CBD, a survey by CBD-intel found that sleep was the fifth most popular reason for using CBD in the UK, France and Germany.

Why does CBD oil help with sleep?

So, why do people find that CBD oil helps them to sleep? It is thought that it also has something to do with how CBD makes us feel

CBD interacts with our endocannabinoid system, which is responsible for homeostasis in the body, so it is believed that it offers feelings of balance and calm due to the way it affects the body. It allows the body to release additional cannabinoids, ‘feel good’ molecules which are made naturally by the body when we are feeling relaxed.

Issues with sleep are often related to other issues, such as anxiety, and research has shown that CBD could help with these issues. You can read more about this particular aspect in our blog on CBD oil for anxiety.

People have also found CBD useful for relieving physical pain, especially for those who suffer from chronic and ‘difficult to treat pain’, so it may offer relief and thus make it easier to fall asleep.

Who is using CBD oil for sleep?

A number of people have publicly discussed the benefits they’ve found when using CBD oil for sleep. In her article for the HuffPost, journalist Leigh Weingus wrote the following:

“My racing thoughts seemed to come to a screeching halt within an hour of taking it, and when I got into bed I fell asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow. Even better, I woke up feeling refreshed and ready to take on the day.”

There are also other proponents of CBD oil for sleep in the public eye. Model and television personality Alessandra Ambrosio has revealed that she uses CBD oil to induce sleep and calm her nerves before important events in her life.
