CBD Oil for the Menopause: The Current Research
Most women will experience menopausal symptoms at some point in their lives, and they can cause discomfort during everyday life. We explore the current research on using CBD oil for the menopause and ask whether it could be used to help manage symptoms.
What is the menopause?
The menopause is a process that occurs when a woman stops having periods and is no longer able to get pregnant naturally. As a woman’s oestrogen levels decline, periods will become less frequent and eventually stop altogether.
This process usually occurs between the ages of 45 and 55 and, according to the NHS website, the average age for a woman to reach the menopause is 51. Having said that, it is possible to experience the menopause prematurely, and around 1 in 100 women reach the menopause before 40 years of age.
What are the common symptoms of the menopause?
As we mentioned earlier, menopausal symptoms can really affect your day-to-day life and some people will experience quite severe effects. It’s also important to note that the symptoms can begin a while before your periods stop and they can last for years after your last period.
Some common symptoms include the following:
- Hot flushes and night sweats
- Sleep disruption and insomnia
- Mood swings
- Depression or anxiety
- Weight gain
- Difficulty with concentration and memory
- Reduced sex drive
- Vaginal dryness
- Joint stiffness or pain
Current research on CBD oil for the menopause
Since there is a range of symptoms that people experience during the menopause, many have suggested that CBD oil could help to manage at least some of these effects. We take a look at three symptoms to see what research suggests.
Those who are going through the menopause may find that their sleep becomes disrupted and they find it harder to sleep through the night.
It is thought that CBD oil can help with sleep due to the calming and balancing effects that it has on the body. One paper found that administration of CBD seemed to increase total sleep time, while another found that sleep scores improved with the first month in two-thirds of patients with sleep complaints.

Depression and anxiety
Another common symptom of the menopause is mood swings and, in more severe cases, people may experience depression or anxiety.
Many have found that CBD oil has helped them with mental health conditions including anxiety and depression. One review concluded that CBD is effective in reducing anxiety behaviours in a range of conditions, while another study found that anxiety scores decreased within the first month for almost 80% of patients in the trial.

Joint stiffness or pain
When estrogen levels drop during the menopause, inflammation can increase. This is because estrogen helps to reduce inflammation and protect your joints. This is one of the reasons why women aged 40 and over are more likely to suffer from joint-related conditions like arthritis.
CBD has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties and many people believe that it can be a helpful treatment for arthritis and joint pain.

At present, there has been limited research which specifically focuses on using CBD oil for the menopause, but as you can see there has been a lot of research around the symptoms of the menopause, and we are hopeful that this is an area that scientists will look into in more detail in the future.
In the meantime, there is also anecdotal evidence to suggest that CBD oil can help women who are going through the menopause. Loose Women panellist Andrea McLean revealed in 2019 that she uses CBD oil to manage the symptoms of an early menopause.
She stated: “It has massively taken the edge off things with the flushes and it has made me less anxious because anxiety is still a key thing for me”.
Overall, it seems that CBD oil could help some women with their menopausal symptoms, especially since there is existing research on some of the specific symptoms, so it may be worth giving it a try. If you are trying CBD oil for the first time, you may want to speak to your doctor first.
