When Should You Take CBD for Sleep?

An increasing number of people are choosing to take CBD to help them with sleep disruption or sleep issues, and hearing reports of success may have encouraged you to give it a try. But, when should you have CBD for sleep and how much should you take? We explore all in this blog.

Why do people take CBD for sleep?

Difficulty sleeping is often given as a reason by people who are choosing to use CBD. In fact, a survey by High Yield Insights found that 21% of new CBD users are looking to treat insomnia.

Insomnia or issues with sleep is fairly common in the UK and around the world. Adults need, on average, between 7 and 9 hours of sleep a night but many people get less than this for a variety of reasons. This can cause feelings of extreme tiredness and irritability during the daytime, as well as difficulty concentrating. 

Sleep problems can often be a knock-on effect of other conditions, such as anxiety or chronic pain. There is some existing evidence that CBD helps with a variety of physical and mental health issues, and it therefore makes sense that it would help people struggling from sleep issues as a result of these too.

What is the best time to take CBD for sleep?

There isn’t necessarily one correct answer to this question and it’s important to remember that everyone is different, so the way CBD interacts with us will be different as well. The best way to establish when you should take CBD is through a process of trial and error.

Some people believe that taking CBD in the evening before you go to sleep is the best approach, as this allows the full relaxing effects of the CBD to be felt. However, others may find that taking it just before bed promotes a sense of wakefulness, so they instead choose to take it in the early evening, a few hours before bed.

Another common choice is to take CBD in the morning, as people like to incorporate it into their daily routine. You can choose to take it with your breakfast, or alongside any other vitamins and supplements you have. Although this may feel counterintuitive, because you are taking the CBD long before you need to feel the effects, it can work well for some people.

This is because, as we mentioned earlier, sleep can often be a side effect of other problems someone is experiencing, whether that’s stress, anxiety, pain or something else. If CBD can help to ease those symptoms, you will feel more relaxed and able to sleep when night time arrives.

How much CBD should I take for sleep?

The same approach of trial and error (or trial and success) will apply to the dosage you choose to take to help you with sleep. Start with a small amount, such as 20mg, and gradually increase it over time until you experience the desired effects on your level of sleepiness.

This also does depend somewhat on how often you are taking CBD, because we tend to look at a daily dosage. So, if you are just taking CBD in the morning or evening, you will be taking your entire daily dosage in one go. If, on the other hand, you choose to take CBD in the morning and the evening, you will likely want to take half of your daily dosage at each point.
