Full-Spectrum CBD Oils
Full-spectrum CBD oils are increasingly popular as they’re so versatile and have numerous reported benefits, ranging from pain management to reducing anxiety. Pick from a wide array of bottle sizes, CBD amounts and strengths.
But before you start browsing, it’s important to consider whether Full Spectrum CBD is right for you, or whether you prefer Broad Spectrum CBD or CBD Isolate. Many users opt for Full Spectrum CBD oils because of the enhanced effect of combining the different natural compounds in the cannabis plant. Read on to make your own choice.
Full-spectrum CBD
Full-spectrum CBD oils contain multiple beneficial cannabis plant extracts including essential oils, terpenes and cannabinoids like cannabinol (CBD). Full-spectrum CBD products may also contain tiny amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) - the cannabinoid that gives you that ‘high’ feeling. However, such a low amount isn’t strong enough to have psychoactive effects and be addictive.
Broad-spectrum CBD
Broad-spectrum CBD oil is very similar to full-spectrum CBD oil as it also contains additional cannabis plant compounds. However, most broad-spectrum CBD products have zero or only trace amounts of THC.
CBD isolate
CBD isolate, on the other hand, is the purest form of CBD that doesn’t contain any other cannabis plant compounds.
The entourage effect
As full-spectrum CBD oils contains numerous cannabis plant compounds, researchers think they may have a more potent combined effect than pure CBD and therefore greater health benefits. This is called the ‘entourage effect.’ While research continues on the effectiveness and risks associated with CBD products, many studies focused on full-spectrum CBD oil and its potential benefits and drawbacks.
Benefits of full-spectrum CBD oils
While the data is limited, and much research looks at the impact of full-spectrum CBD oil on mice, and not humans, results so far suggest that full-spectrum CBD has a great deal of promise. Possible benefits of taking full-spectrum CBD oil include:
- Pain: studies have shown that CBD may help reduce chronic pain through interactions with endocannabinoid receptors and neurotransmitters, as well as by reducing inflammation.
- Anxiety: CBD oil has also shown promise as a treatment for depression and anxiety with an impact on the central nervous system, potentially offering sufferers a more natural approach to wellbeing.
- Cancer: CBD may help reduce symptoms related to cancer and the side effects of cancer treatments such as nausea, vomiting and pain – but much more research needs to be done.
- Acne: recent studies suggest CBD oil could help treat acne thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties and ability to reduce sebum production.
- Neurological disorders: one of the most studied uses of CBD is for neurological disorders like epilepsy and multiple sclerosis. Several CBD-based medications are already available.
- Heart: recent research has linked CBD with benefits for the heart and circulatory system, including helping to lower high blood pressure.
It’s early days and CBD research is still in its infancy, but researchers have every reason to believe that CBD products – whether full spectrum, broad spectrum or isolate – can enhance our health and wellbeing.
What exactly does the full-spectrum CBD oil contain?
The cannabis plant is quite literally packed with different types of beneficial compounds. Many of these make their way into your full-spectrum CBD oil.
- Cannabinoids. You find more than 100 cannabinoids including CBD and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC is psychoactive. CBD is not. Both are thought to have therapeutic effects.
- Terpenes. Packed with 150+ terpenes that affect the plant’s fragrance and can also have therapeutic benefits.
- Flavonoids. Cannabis has 20+ different flavonoids. These are found in lots of plants including fruits, vegetables and grains. Like terpenes, they have therapeutic effects. Researchers believe that flavonoids in cannabis could have anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and neuroprotective properties.

Help Me ChooseFull-Spectrum CBD Oils FAQ
There’s a lot of debate about which is "better". However, CBD is a personal matter and affects everyone differently, so the product that works best for you depends on your own individual needs and preferences.
If you’re interested in the potential therapeutic benefits of the entourage effect, full-spectrum CBD may be the best choice. Whereas if you’re sensitive to THC or just want to avoid it, you might want to try broad-spectrum CBD. That way, you’ll still get some benefits of entourage effect but with no THC. Don’t want anything but CBD? CBD isolate is your best bet.
Many people choose to apply CBD oil sublingually using a dropper or spray – this means you apply it under the tongue and will feel the effects of the CBD oil more quickly.
If you don’t like the idea of this, you can also buy full-spectrum CBD oils in capsule form. Or you could opt for CBD oil as a topical (gel, cream or lotion) applied directly to the affected area, especially if you’re using CBD to manage targeted pain.
It’s usually recommended to begin with about 20mg per day. After a week, increase this by 5mg. Continue gradually until you start feeling the effect.
For CBD edibles and capsules, it’s easy to dose as the amount of CBD in each serving will be indicated on the label. If you’ve opted for CBD oil with a dropper, some brands include how much CBD is in each drop, so you can easily figure how many you need. While others only include the total amount of CBD in the bottle. If this is the case, remember that one drop is about 0.05 millilitres (ml) – that’s a single drop, not a full dropper. A 10-ml bottle of CBD oil therefore contains roughly 200 drops. Divide the total amount of CBD by the number of drops.
