Scientific studies and anecdotal evidence suggest that CBD could have great potential for reducing pain and enhancing muscle recovery. As part of a holistic approach to wellbeing, CBD can help decrease inflammation and manage pain more easily, whether as a CBD oil, CBD capsules, CBD topicals or edibles.
What is pain?
Before we explore how CBD can help and which CBD products to choose, first let’s look at what pain is. It is physical discomfort and your body’s way of telling you something is wrong. It may simply be unpleasant but can be debilitating and generated other physical symptoms like nausea and dizziness. It also has an emotional effect - anger, depression and mood swings – which in turn impacts on your mental wellbeing.
Acute pain is severe, short-lived and usually occurs when you are injured.
Chronic pain lasts for long periods of time and may be the result of a disease or even be disease in its own right with changes to the central nervous system.
Approaches to managing pain
Today, doctors often seek to manage the symptoms and may recommend prescription medication. However, a more holistic, natural approach can also be effective – from plant-based remedies to lifestyle choices. Cannabidiol (CBD) is also an increasingly popular complementary remedy for pain management.
Understanding CBD oil for pain
CBD is a naturally occurring cannabinoid found in the cannabis or hemp plant. CBD act on the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS) – the internal system that helps maintain balance (homeostasis) based on complex cell signalling pathways in the central nervous system and immune system.
Research suggests that CBD may interact with neurological receptors in the spinal cord that suppress chronic inflammatory pain. CBD could also strengthen the effects of AEA, an endogenous cannabinoid that reduces pain. It is also thought that topical CBD could reduce arthritis-related joint swelling and pain.
However, large-scale clinical trials are necessary to fully understand how CBD can help manage pain.
What about CBD oil and inflammation?
Inflammation enables the body to fight harmful invading agents, such as infections and toxins, by releasing chemicals to trigger the immune system. Chronic inflammation is when this response leaves the body in a continuous state of alert. In the short-term, inflammation helps us heal faster. It is thought that cannabidiol is a plant-based, natural anti-inflammatory agent.
CBD oil: targeting different types of pain
Pain comes in many forms and with different symptoms.
Let’s look at some of the ways CBD can help manage this pain.
CBD & arthritis
Researchers have observed that topical CBD gel has the potential to help reduce inflammation and pain, as well as joint swelling due to arthritis.
CBD & migraines
Research suggests that cannabinoids have great promise in treating migraine pain. CBD is also thought to have the potential to help manage stress, anxiety and sleep, which often act as migraine triggers.
CBD & cancer pain
Cannabidiol is also increasingly used to relieve cancer pain. A recent report by the National Cancer Institute includes CBD among potential options to minimise chemotherapy side effects.
CBD & endometriosis
In the absence of effective medical treatments for endometriosis, a condition affecting 1 in 10 women, CBD is increasingly being used within a holistic approach to help manage the pain. Some researchers seem to think that CBD could play a role in limiting or stopping the spread of endometrial cells.
CBD & back pain
Increasingly widespread, back pain costs the UK economy an estimated £10 billion a year. Evidence suggests that CBD oil could help, in particular, through its apparent ability to reduce inflammation.
CBD & muscle soreness
After a hard workout, muscle soreness, aches, and inflammation often occur. CBD seems to be an effective way to reduce pain and enhance recovery.
Using CBD for pain
The first question to ask is whether you want Full Spectrum CDB, Broad Spectrum CBD or CBD Isolate.
Here are the main differences.
Broad Spectrum CBD oilThis Broad Spectrum CBD contains numerous cannabis plant extracts. These include essential oils, terpenes and cannabinoids especially cannabinol (CBD). All the THC is removed.
Full Spectrum CBD oils
Full Spectrum CBD also contains different hemp plant compounds including very small amounts of THC. This is thought to optimise the benefits without getting you high.
This is the purest form of CBD (99%). All the other phytocannabinoids, including THC, are stripped away leaving behind the CBD chemical compound in its purest form.
Next, you’ll need to decide which delivery method suits you best. This really depends on your preferences and specific pain. There is no right or wrong answer.
CBD oils & tinctures for pain
CBD oils and tinctures contain a mixer – either an oil or distilled alcohol – and are often applied with a dropper or spray. Place a few drops under the tongue, hold them there for a minute and then swallow. To work out the right dosage, check the bottle carefully. When applied sublingually (under the tongue) the CBD is absorbed into the veins and directly into the bloodstream.
CBD topicals for pain
Or you can choose to apply CBD directly to the painful area. This is known as topical administration. CBD oil drops can be massaged into the skin, alternatively, you can find a wide array of dedicated topical CBD products for pain including balms, lotions, gels and creams.
CBD capsules and edibles for pain
Another option is to buy CBD capsules or CBD edibles such as gummies. They tend to take longer to have an effect but are really easy to dose and carry around with you.
Things to remember when choosing your CBD pain product
- Make sure the CBD brand is transparent about the ingredients and processes – it’s important to check that it provides third-party lab reports.
- Take the time to work out the most adapted dose for you. Although there are no rules, it’s a good idea to start slowly with small amounts – for example, you could try 20mg of CBD a day for a week or 2 and gradually increase the amount.
- CBD isn’t a miracle solution that will immediately eliminate all pain and discomfort –however, it is thought to play an important role in a holistic, natural approach to your health and wellbeing
